$1.57 Million Boost to Employment Opportunities for Indigenous Australians in Lindsay
Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, and Liberal Candidate for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh, announced that a re-elected Coalition Government would invest $1.57 million in Muru Mittigar to support 154 Indigenous jobseekers to find employment opportunities across Western Sydney.
Senator Payne said Muru Mittigar was a fantastic local Aboriginal organisation that was empowering local Indigenous Australians to find and stay in work.
“I have been pleased to work alongside Muru Mittigar, led by Peter Chia, for years and I have seen firsthand how Muru supports Indigenous Australians to find sustainable employment opportunities,” Senator Payne said.
“This funding will assist Muru to build on their connections with Sydney Zoo, Lendlease and the Western Sydney Airport Corporation, to provide job pathways into some of the most exciting and important infrastructure projects taking place across our region.
Liberal Candidate for Lindsay, Melissa McIntosh said the Tailored Assistance Employment Grants would provide certainty for jobseekers.
“This funding will ensure that local Indigenous Australians will play an integral part in the delivery of cutting-edge infrastructure projects across our community.
“Projects like The Northern Road Upgrade could have native trees planted using traditional knowledge and skills.
“I am very pleased that the Morrison Government’s strong economic management means it can reinvest the dividends of a strong economy back into local solutions such as this one.
Peter Chia, Chief Executive Officer of Muru Mittigar welcomed the funding announcement.
“This announcement will create much-needed job opportunities for local Aboriginal jobseekers and will assist those who want to upskill and move into higher roles,” Mr Chia said.
“All jobs are guaranteed for a minimum of three years and will follow Muru’s strong record of partnering with clients, such as Lendlease, to deliver a strong, skilled and qualified workforce for Western Sydney.
“The work that undertakes Muru Mittigar enables our Aboriginal workers to learn more about their cultural heritage while caring for Country.”
Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion said Muru Mittigar was the latest Indigenous organisation that has benefited from the Indigenous Advancement Strategy’s focus on getting adults into work.
“These targeted grants are community-led initiatives that connect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander jobseekers to real jobs and is part of the Morrison Government commitment to get more Australians into work,” Minister Scullion said.
“The very best form of welfare the Government can provide is a job, and this investment is about supporting the Government’s efforts to close the gap in Indigenous disparity.
The Tailored Assistance Employment Grants are part of the Government’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy and complement other Government programs which have resulted in a 23.3 per cent in the number of Indigenous Australians with a job since the 2011 Census and 30 per cent increase in the number of Indigenous entrepreneurs in small business.
Funding for this job creating investment is being delivered out of existing resources within the $5.2 billion Indigenous Advancement Strategy.
