Penrith and Mulgoa businesses are set to benefit from a NSW Government decision to continue Boxing Day sales across NSW.

After a successful two-year trial, a review has determined that Boxing Day trading should continue in retail sectors across the state. The government will legislate in the coming months to enable trade to continue on the public holiday.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith said the decision by local businesses and workers on whether to work on December 26 was optional.

“We know this is one of the busiest trading days of the year and it’s great news that businesses in Penrith and Mulgoa can take advantage of such a popular shopping day,” Stuart Ayres said.

“Until the Liberals and Nationals Government introduced the change in 2015, the people of Western Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and many parts of regional NSW, had to miss out on getting a Boxing Day bargain close to home.”

Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa said we know the opportunity to trade on Boxing Day not only allows businesses to increase their sales but gives stores in the local area the opportunity to compete with their online and interstate counterparts.

“This is a government focused on supporting jobs and the economy and this initiative for the retail sector is a boon for the people of Mulgoa and Penrith,” Tanya Davies said.

In 2015 the government amended retail trading laws, allowing shops across NSW to open on Boxing Day, if staff freely elect to work. Retailers who coerce employees to work on Boxing Day will continue to face fines of up to $11,000 per employee.

To ensure retailers and their employees are fully aware of their rights, the government will work with retailers and unions to develop and implement an information campaign ahead of Boxing Day this year.
