As the countdown to the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, Vivid Sydney begins, TAFE NSW Nepean students are preparing to illuminate The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney with their Light Houses light installations.

This will be the first time regional TAFE NSW students have been involved in Vivid Sydney, giving them incredibly valuable work experience. TAFE NSW Nepean Diploma and Certificate III Screen and Media students have collaborated with students from TAFE NSW Enmore, Eora, Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Murwillumbah and Kingscliff to have their creative vision incorporated as part of the installation.

Now in its 10th year, the festival highlights the talents of the next generation of designers, 3D artists, animators and electronic musicians, including more than 100 TAFE NSW students from across the state.

For the second consecutive year, TAFE NSW student installations will illuminate The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. This year visitors will follow a pathway that weaves through an exciting nocturnal environment inspired by nature. The inspiration behind the Light Houses installation is the role lighthouses played over Australia’s history in welcoming successive waves of immigrants to Australian shores, chart a course to a safe haven.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said, “TAFE NSW Nepean students have been working collaboratively to develop meaningful and thoughtful concepts behind the artwork which will appear on the exterior of the Light Houses. The six designs tells a visual story of the student’s interpretation of what the Western Sydney area is to them.

“Vivid Sydney is firmly established as a must-see event, and for TAFE NSW students involved in the festival, this has presented them a fabulous practical learning opportunity. As students embark on their post-TAFE NSW life, they will be equipped with the skills necessary to start a career in the industry.

“I encourage everyone to start planning their trip to Sydney to get the most out of this year’s exciting line-up and to see the cutting edge developments in projection, lighting and sound TAFE NSW students have created.”

The Light Houses installations will appear as part of the festival for 23 nights from Friday 25 May to Saturday 16 June.
