Local Health Provider Selected to Operate After Hours Clinic
Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network (NBMPHN) and its predecessor organisations have been operating the Nepean After Hours GP Clinic for just over 10 years. The clinic was established in December 2006 by the then Nepean Division of General Practice in response to an identified need for better access to GP after hours services.
Under Government funding guidelines for Primary Health Networks, NBMPHN is required to contract service providers to meet the local healthcare needs rather than provide them directly. In early 2017 NBMPHN undertook the tender process which has resulted in the appointment of Penrith After Hours Doctors as the new service provider.
The current Nepean After Hours GP Clinic will operate until 30 June 2017. Due to the expansion of Nepean Hospital’s services which will occupy the area of the current Clinic, from July 1 2017 after hours GP services will be provided at Penrith After Hours Doctors at Nepean Shopping Village (Station Street, Penrith).
It will be open from 6pm to midnight Monday to Friday and from 3pm to midnight Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays.
The new after hours clinic remains in the central Penrith area, is within easy access of a 24 hour pharmacy and accessible by public transport. Ample car parking and onsite security is also available. Appointments are not required. It will continue to be a bulk billing service.
After hours services are for people whose health condition cannot wait until their regular GP is available. Typically, after hours services treat conditions such as upper respiratory tract symptoms such as sore throat and coughs, earaches and toothaches, minor skin infections, rashes without fever, insect bites and stings, abrasions and bruises and musculo- skeletal problems such a sprains and back pain.
The Penrith After Hours Doctors clinic will provide a report to the patient’s nominated GP the next day for follow-up and ongoing care.
NBMPHN also supports After Hours Clinics in the Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains and a number of home visiting services.
Lizz Reay, NBMPHN CEO, says, “We are committed to ensuring the community has access to healthcare when their regular GP is not available. An after hours clinic is vital to help reduce the pressure on Nepean Hospital’s Emergency Department.
“We work closely with the community, GPs and the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District to understand the healthcare needs of the local community and provide services that address the gaps and are tailored to the needs of the area.”
A directory of local After Hours services can be found on the Nepean Blue Mountains PHN website.
