Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian join the Mayors of eight western Sydney councils to launch the City Deal.
Council Mayors have welcomed the Western Sydney City Deal, which will lay the foundations for the creation of a thriving Western City of 1.5 million residents within 20 years.

Stretching from Wollondilly in the south to Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains, the Western City includes the key regional centres of Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool, Fairfield and Penrith.

The City Deal includes commitments to:

  • Joint Federal-State funding of the first stage of a North-South rail link;
  • Targeted initiatives to create jobs and develop skills across the region; and
  • Establish a $150 million Liveability Fund, shared among the eight participating Councils.

“For the first time ever, Federal, State and Local governments are working together to concentrate their focus on meeting the needs of the people of Western Sydney.

“The commitment to critical Government investment, particularly in transport, jobs and infrastructure, will be welcomed by the communities of the Western City.

“The signing of the City Deal between three levels of government today marks a fundamental change in how Canberra and Macquarie St work with the region and its residents.

“We have commitments from Federal and State governments to get moving on vital pieces of regional infrastructure and our local communities will benefit from the Liveability Fund, providing facilities such as parks and community spaces needed for a growing population.

“The City Deal is above and beyond politics. It was negotiated in good faith over 18 months across governments and by Independent, Labor and Liberal mayors. We are very proud of the outcome.

“Councils are looking after their communities by thinking and acting regionally and collaboratively.

“We will also continue working together over the coming months to clarify more details which will flow from this deal and ensure our communities will benefit from this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a smart city that is more liveable, more productive, more skilled and more innovative.

“The very fact that we are all working in partnership with a long-term strategic plan for the Western City’s future will help attract businesses, universities and other investors to put down roots in the new Western City for the benefit of everyone.

“Getting jobs and connectivity right is not only essential to creating the Western City, but it will change people’s lives.

“We are the region with more people – travelling longer – to get to work. Cutting the commute can have a huge impact on our quality of life.

“International experience shows working together – across all levels of government – is the key ingredient to really transform a region, and the Western Sydney City Deal will be the catalyst for a stronger, more connected and sustainable Western City.”
