Penrith Seniors to Get Tech Savvy
Delivered in partnership with Telstra, Tech Savvy Seniors provides free or low cost training through a network of community colleges and libraries to help older people learn to use computers, tablets and smartphones.
Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith today announced that Nepean Community College (NCC) and Penrith City Library (PCL) are among 130 locations across NSW to deliver the Tech Savvy Seniors program in 2019.
“Technology changes quickly so it’s important to ensure seniors aren’t left behind, and I’m delighted that NCC and PCL will be working with Penrith seniors to help them learn new skills such as downloading apps, checking the train/bus schedule online and sending emails and photos.”
“I encourage all older people in the Penrith community to take a look at what’s on offer and learn something new,” said Stuart Ayres.
Eric Wright, Principal at Nepean Community College said it’s enormously satisfying to see seniors who are savvy people get to grips with all they can achieve on a computer and on line.
The NSW Liberals & Nationals Government committed $2 million in 2015 to increase training places for older people to 38,000 over four years, which has been achieved two years ahead of schedule with over 55,000 spots for budding digital enthusiasts in 2018.
Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies said Tech Savvy Seniors has supported thousands of seniors to boost their digital skills, with more older people trained than anticipated thanks to an increase in the available places from 6,500 to 9,000 each year.
“As family, friends, businesses and organisations increasingly connect with us online, it’s important to ensure seniors aren’t missing out on the benefits,” Mrs Davies said.
“Tech Savvy Seniors empowers seniors to take advantage of the digital word to keep up with friends and family, shop for groceries, and even do their banking online.”
Further details regarding training modules available and workshop dates will be available later this year.
