Summer Exhibition Suite Official Opening - Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest
On Friday 1 December Aboriginal leader Warren Mundine AO will open the Summer Exhibition Suite at Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. The opening event will also feature a performance by Nicole Monks, a trans-disciplinary artist of Yamatji Wajarri, Dutch and English heritage, whose work is included in the exhibition.
Comprising two complementary exhibitions: Up in the Sky and Landing Points, the Summer Suite will be exhibited from 2 December 2017 until 4 March 2018.
On the 20th anniversary of Tracey Moffatt’s work Up in the Sky, Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest will exhibit this series of 25 black and white photographs. Produced in 1997, the photographic series may be read as black and white film stills, set in an iconic outback Australian landscape. Moffatt’s landscape is peopled, with an open-ended narrative that is provocative of questions of personal, cultural, racial and political histories, both remarkably Australian and global.
Headlining the Summer Exhibition Suite, in the Main Gallery, a curated exhibition - Landing Points - will, along with commissioned essays, look to Moffatt’s work as a starting point in consideration of the last 20 years of race, place and identity in Australia.
11 artists, established and early career, have responded to the cultural complexities layered in the Australian landscape and our relation to it to produce new works for Landing Points. The works by artists Tim Johnson, Jason Wing, Alana Hunt, Caroline Garcia, Victoria Garcia, Carla Leech, Nicole Monks, Mark Shorter, Cigdem Aydemir Joan Ross and Hayley Megan French showcase several different artistic approaches, including painting, performance, photography, film and installation.
Nyunggai Warren Mundine AO, one of Australia’s most recognised, respected and revered activists and agents for improving his people’s standing, will deliver the opening address for the exhibition. Overcoming segregation, discrimination, racism, personal hardship and political betrayal, Mundine tells it all in his just released book Warren Mundine in Black+White. Warren’s optimism and pride in his vision for Australia and its First Nations make for a fitting prelude for Landing Points | Up in the Sky.
Warren Mundine in Black +White will be on sale and for signing by Warren at the opening.
