The 10-year, $3.5 billion Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative, will see significant investment in key road freight and tourism corridors, as part of the Australian Government’s commitment to deliver game-changing productivity improvements across Australia’s supply chains.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, the Hon Michael McCormack, said the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative would deliver targeted upgrades across corridors to provide a more reliable road network, improve access for higher capacity vehicles, and better connect regional communities.

“Investment in these strategic corridors will facilitate regional economic growth by helping support the expansion of key local industries, improve connectivity and access, while also improving safety on these key roads,” Mr McCormack said.

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Andrew Broad MP, said upgrades to corridors delivered through the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative would address critical pinch points.

“Targeted investments along priority corridors will ensure industry can efficiently move freight from key agricultural and mining areas, to transport hubs and processing facilities,” Mr Broad said.

“These sort of upgrades will support local economies by increasing economic activity by ensuring that visitors and locals have reliable access to key tourism and recreational areas.”

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, has welcomed the release of principles to help prioritise investments and ensure funding is directed at improving road reliability, and better connecting communities.

“Works funded through the ROSI are expected to make a real difference to local communities, through sealing, flood immunity improvements, road strengthening and widening, pavement rehabilitation, bridge and culvert upgrades and road realignments to freight roads and transport hubs,” Senator Payne said.

“Our government has a strong record of investing in road infrastructure projects which have helped future-proof the needs of western Sydney communities, cut travel times and eased congestion.

“I look forward to continuing to work alongside my parliamentary colleagues, residents and community stakeholders to further identify important road projects in our region.”

Funding under the package will be available over 10 years from 2018−19.
