World-leading research will take place in Western Sydney thanks to Morrison Government funding.

The Morrison Government is providing $415,416 to fund a research project at Western Sydney University, through the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA).

Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh congratulated Dr Renee Prokopavicius, who will conduct world-leading research.

“This research project will investigate how different Australian tree species respond to extreme heat by tracking dynamic changes in water use during both natural and experimental heatwaves,” Ms McIntosh said.

“This will help identify heat-tolerant tree species which can improve the success of urban tree planting.

“This is a world-leading research project that is addressing an important issue that will make a real difference to every Australian, and Western Sydney is at the forefront of this research. Only recently did we celebrate Professor Belinda Medley receiving an ARC grant.”

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said research done at our universities led to the development of new products and innovations that drive job growth, business opportunities and productivity gains.

“The productive capacity of our nation relies on educated workers, able to access innovation and research, to drive growth and opportunity,” Mr Tehan said.

“Our Government is making a significant investment in Australia’s next generation of researchers working in key priority areas to grow our research and innovation capacity. This research will generate new knowledge, develop new technologies, and lead to new products and jobs. The research targeting natural disasters will make Australians safer and improve how we prepare for future challenges.”

The Morrison Government is providing $81.8 million to fund 200 research projects through the DECRA program.
