“We won a gold medal for our pepper steak pie, a silver medal for our chunky beef pie, although there was no gold category for this category, and a bronze medal for our plain meat pie,” said Phill Ireland, owner and baker of Penrith Pies and Pastries.

“I was really surprised. It was the first time I had entered into a pie comp and funnily enough all three pies I entered picked up a winner.”

Mr Ireland and his wife Ann have owned their shop for less than two years but have been baking a lifetime.

“I’ve been in the baking business for 35 years,” Mr Ireland said.

“We used to own a bakery, but never a pie shop and we both really wanted to.

“Before we opened we did a lot of research. We travelled around Australia picking out the best pies and flavours, so we could create the best.”

He said success was a matter of passion, best-quality fresh ingredients and knowing what customers wanted.

Penrith Pies and Pastries is in the Abcoe Centre, on the corner of York Rd and Batt St.
